As a business where most employees work from home, we consider ourselves very experienced in the WFH department. Our folks have the flexibility to work at their leisure (no 9 to 5 structure). And we honestly don’t mind if they work in shorts or work out in the middle of the day. Working with such a structure has been great for us. But, it’s taken time to reach a level of efficiency. All of us had to develop some habits, which have benefited us in the long run. Today, I’m sharing 7 of our absolute must-do tips for working from home. I hope it’ll improve your productivity as you work from home too.
Working from bed in PJs equals zzz: At first, WFH seems like the best excuse to lounge in bed and wear pajamas all day. But it’s not really that great. One thing tends to get in the way – you will inevitably go to sleep. The safer alternative is to work from a dedicated space in your home, that is NOT your bed. Maybe slot in some time to take a nap instead?
Make a work vs personal task list: One of the major roadblocks to WFH is the constant distractions. You can’t help but think of laundry, cooking and errands. So I make a combined task list and cross things off on both columns. Some days personal tasks outweigh work and vice versa. But at the end of the day, everything is checked off.
Share work schedule with family and colleagues: If you are working from home, you have to balance the time you give to your family and friends, colleagues and yourself. The easiest way to do is by drawing lines with everyone. That way your mom isn’t calling you during a meeting. And your colleague isn’t asking for numbers during a meditation session.
Skip trips to the kitchen. Hydrate and snack at your desk: Sometimes going to get a coffee is a great mini-break. But if you’re taking mini-breaks every hour, you’ve got a problem. Instead, keep a snack (or two!) and water at your desk. So you can snack and work without breaking your chain of thought.
Schedule in some lazy time: Being highly motivated and going beast mode is awesome. But it isn’t something you can do every day. You’ll find yourself taking hour-long breaks in your bid to do too much in one go. Killing your creativity and productivity. Instead, give yourself short breaks for something simple like scrolling Instagram or doing some stretches.
Declutter your space and mind: Starting the day with a clear desk is like starting the day with a clean slate. A messy workspace leads to a chaotic thought process. And you’ll find yourself shuttling between tasks without finishing anything. Instead, clear your space before and during your work. Trust us, you’ll grow to love the clarity.
Surround yourself with positive messaging: WFH is quite an isolated process. So it’s natural to feel bogged down from time to time. In such moments, having positive messaging around you lifts your spirits. It could be a piece of stationery, post its, a mug or anything that puts a smile on your face.
