When we started working on this gift idea, I had major concerns about a pink overload. It’s one thing to like pink. And another, to give 33 gifts, all in the same color & in the same box. It seemed excessive & impractical to use. Imagine a desk covered entirely in pink stationery. Pink stickies for notes. Pink pens to write with. Pink stapler to staple pink stapler pins with. To me, that sounded a little over the top. But, then again, this set wasn’t for me. It was for a friend who absolutely loves pink. So, we stopped thinking so much & just started working on the idea. And you know what, I was completely wrong. It looked fantastic! Check it out.
We don’t really have a step by step tutorial, since we bought most of the stuff. However, I would like to share the general process & what we included in the set. As well, as PDFs of the stationery we designed, using her initials – AJ.
Time: This took us a lot of time to assemble. But, that’s because we were very particular of using only shades of pink, white and gold. So, it takes some research to find all the items.
Budget: We didn’t end up spending a lot on the entire gift. Though there were 33 objects, none of them were expensive.
Materials: List of materials PDF
We started working on the gift, by making a list of common stationery items. These were the materials we needed to buy. And they varied from basics (sharpeners, pencils, erasers etc) to decorative (embellishments like ribbons, stickers) to utility (scissors, crafts knife, stapler and more).
We tried to keep an open mind about what was available easily. Instead of getting stuck on a particular item. For example, we wanted to add a small pink stand. But, we couldn’t find a plain one that could be delivered on time. Which meant, forgetting about it altogether. Though, this doesn’t happen a lot. Most stationery is easily available.
While we were hunting for the store bought stuff, we also started designing some personalised stationery. This included – Stickers, Card, Envelopes, Stamp & Letter paper. Click through the underlined portion above to download the free PDFs.
We tried to keep the design simple & baby pink. Because ornate designs & multiple colours don’t always print well. This way, the stationery could even be printed at home. Like the letter paper below.
Once the stationery was designed, we printed & assembled them. To give it completion, we used thick matte finish paper for the cards & laminated paper for the stickers. This gave them a nice shine. On the other hand, the letter paper was on regular A4 sheets & the envelopes on thick A3 sheets.
If you’re designing your own stationery, we have some pointers you should keep in mind:
- Focus on sizes & proportions. Best way is to measure an existing size you like & add the same sizes to your design.
- We used Illustrator to make the designs. If you’re uncomfortable with it, you can try using Canva, Photoshop or Paint. All of them work well for basic designs. However, if you feel unsure of using softwares, you can contact us through this form & we can design a custom set for you.
- Always do a test print out on the final paper quality. It makes a huge difference on the end result.
- Avoid gold, silver & bronze colours, if possible. They are difficult to print & are usually more expensive.
- Lastly, spend 10 minutes & think about the person using the stationery. Are they likely to use, that particular design?
With the store bought & custom made stationery ready, we started thinking about the packaging. We had to send the gift overseas & courier charges are high, we decided to place all of them in a sturdy box, which we covered in brown paper (to give it a deceptive look hehe!) & string. We lined the box with paper, and painted it white & pink. This way, the box itself, could be kept on a desk.
We packed the contents in small plastic packets & put stickers on each of them.
And that is it! A power-packed pretty in pink stationery set.
